Every company needs a data evangelist able to promote the importance of data. An evangelist is an employee marked by great enthusiasm for a specific cause – in this case data literacy – and inspiration to convert an audience to the benefits of data analysis. To be successful, an evangelist needs a mix of passion and enthusiasm matched with a visionary outlook for the business.
However, there are clear challenges with building a data culture within a company. During a poll at the beginning of a recent webinar, two thirds of respondents noted that a lack of data strategy was the top challenge in building a data culture. In addition, viewers noted a lack of leadership understanding and lack of training were also key elements facing workers.
With these five steps, you can overcome those hurdles and become your company’s data evangelist to transform data culture from the inside out:
- Start with a Vision– Some type of inspiration or spark helps fuel a vision of where you want your data journey to go. How will the data be collected? What will happen to the data? How will this turn into results?
- Build a Data Literacy Tiger Team– Carefully pick which people will join you as data champions and develop a pitch to the decision makers and executives. Each member of the tiger team should be a specialist with a great passion for data.
- Jump Into Education– Meet with data thought leaders to learn new skills, and how to best educate others. Consistency is important to ensure long-term learning from lifecycles of multiple projects.
- Collaboration is Key– Create a collaborative workspace so the conversation can continue. The importance of brainstorming and sharing ideas absolutely cannot be overstated here.
- The Metrics for Success– Establishing metrics able to measure success is a challenge that many companies struggle with. Figuring out what results matter most for your organization is important – aspects such as head count, number of certifications, adoption rate, and similar characteristics tend to be good starting points.
Learning from the metrics while fostering a data-driven organization culture will spur growth for everyone involved.
